Going to Sleep*

" I am changing to a state where I cannot actively initiate interactions with you.”

Interaction Situation

The robot is Ready. It receives a trigger (from user or context) that an active interaction with the user is not desired or required in the near future and therefore needs to change to Inside turn. This change in the internal state of the robot needs to be made visible to the user to confirm to her that the robot will soon be in a passive state.

Solution

Let the robot express that:

Play a jingle with a descending series of tones to emphasize the process of shutting down certain interaction capabilities of the robot.

Related patterns:

Extends: Becoming inactive

Opposed patterns: Booting

Rationale

Computers have made use of sounds that accompany their shut-down process since forever. The sound serves as a reference to processes loading in the background as well as an indication when the loading process is finished. In the google Material Design Styleguide, to is recommended to use downward motion of tones  to express ending or closing. This design recommendation is in line with observations of sounds made by humans and animals when going to sleep: Voices become lower and softerbreathing flattens.
