Design Challenge
Interaction Situation
The robot needs to show the user some information from an external source. The robot wants to gain the user’s attention and then direct it to the information. The user needs to understand where the information is located and what the robot is showing.
Communication
Goal
“I am showing you information. Please pay attention to me and to this information.”
Design Solution
Solution
Let the robot express that: It wants the user to pay attention to what is happening next (Demanding attention). It directs its attention towards the user using a user-oriented positioning in the room, letting robot and user face each other. (Attentive). It directs its attention to a source of information and wants the user to follow with their gaze and perceive this information by directing its gaze and/or body towards the information or making a defined pointing gesture towards it. (Directing attention) To better direct the user’s attention towards the information, the previous two steps can be alternated, so that the robot switches between directing its attention to the user and the external information. Its operation mode is <on>, setting the status light to permanently glowing. (Operation mode on)
Rationale
Showing something to someone is characterized by a shift in foci of attention: The attention switches between a focus on the conversation partner and the object or information that is shown. It also includes the goal to take the interaction partner’s attention along and towards the object / information of interest. According to attention research, the focus of the robot’s attentions is best indicated by the orientation of its front and gaze. It has also been shown that a shift of position and gaze attracts attention. Attention towards an object / information can further be supported by a dedicated pointing gesture. Further details about the described sub-actions can be found in the descriptions of the Atomic Patterns “Attentive”, “Demanding attention” and “Directing attention”.
