Design Challenge
Interaction Situation
The trajectories of human and robot are crossing and human and robot get too close to each other that neither can move, robot can no longer navigate freely or safety issues might occur. One agent must change its direction/trajectory to avoid a collision.
Communication
Goal
“Please evade me.”
Design Solution
Solution
This pattern is a variation of the “Approaching” pattern. If the person does not leave the safety zone within three seconds, urgency is created by varying the light projection and a voice output: Make the projected light circle flash and have the robot issue a polite request to move out of the way (“Sorry to bother you, but could you please move out of the way?”). For reasons of inclusivity also show the speech output textual on a display.
Rationale
Red is a color that is commonly used to symbolize danger or a problem and communicate some kind of warning, for example in traffic signs or various HMIs. Design research has also shown that blinking makes a stimulus more salient and therefore the chance of attracting attention towards it increases. Many technologies use blinking lights to get humans attention and warn such as hazard lights of cars, that blink all around the car, traffic lights indicating drivers that people could be crossing a street, lighthouses and many more. An approach combining visual cues and speech increases the probability of being noticed by other road users. Furthermore textual output via speech and display can give further reasoning on the urgent requirement of attention towards the robot.
