Design Challenge

Interaction Situation

Human and robot are moving in the same area. The robot changes the direction of its route: It reverses and makes this change of direction visible to the user.

Communication
Goal

“I am moving backwards.”

Design Solution

Solution

Let the robot express that it is driving backwards with the help of light and sound. Use a light in the middle of the back and front of the robot, which lights up white while it is reversing. The reversing light should be visible from all sides of the robot and ideally be activated shortly before the actual movement of the robot to give the user a heads-up for the next movement of the robot Another option to make the reverse movement more salient, by using a beeping sound.

Rationale

Vehicles traditionally use light to indicate reversing. Larger vehicles like transporters add a beeping sound.
