Design Challenge
Interaction Situation
The user and the robot are engaged in a game where the user has to perform well on a certain task. The robot signals its (mental) support during the task and encourages the user to perform well. Thus, the user knows that the robot is on their side and has their best interests in mind.
Communication
Goal
“I believe in you, and I’ll support you to show good performance in the upcoming action!”
Design Solution
Solution
Let the robot express that: It directs its attention towards the user using a user-oriented positioning in the room, letting robot and user face each other (Attentive). It’s optimism and an active activation of the user, by showing a convincing expression of motivation and strength (Contagious energy). Its operation mode is <on>, setting the status light to permanently glowing (Operation mode on).
Rationale
The act of motivating an interaction partner requires two sub-actions: facing the interaction partner to signal that your attention is focused on them (e.g. through long, intense eye contact), and showing strength and sparking optimism and energy for the upcoming task. For this purpose, humans use victory and affirmative gestures alongside encouraging words, or fast, far-reaching movements (as also observed in animals). Further details can be found in the descriptions of the Atomic Patterns “Attentive” and “Contagious Energy”
