Design Challenge

Interaction Situation

During the interaction, situations can occur that are challenging for the user. In these situations, the robot can act as a supporter of the user and motivate them by showing an expression of strength. Combined with a motivational speech, the robot’s demonstration of strength can be contagious and increase the user’s belief in their own capabilities, and thus enhancing their performance.

Communication
Goal

“I am strong and so are you! Let’s go!”

Design Solution

Solution

You can best express positive energy and support through movement. Energy can be expressed (and transferred to the user) with short quick movements. If the robot has arms, energy can also be expressed through gestures of strength or victory.

Rationale

The robot takes the role of a motivational coach and ideas for the robot behavior can be deduced from coaching behavior. When motivating people, coaches are very present, and use victory and affirmative gestures as well as far-reaching, fast movements alongside motivational speeches. Similarly, energy is expressed by animals such as dogs, cats, or squirrels through fast, vital movements around the environment. This behavior can also be related to the personality trait of extroversion and is thereby associated with longer and more intensive eye contact during a conversation.
