Design Challenge

Interaction Situation

Human and robot are moving in the same area. The robot changes the direction of its route by turning left or right and makes this change of direction visible to the user.

Communication
Goal

“I am turning left / right.”

Design Solution

Solution

Let the robot express with light that it is moving in a certain direction. Use indicators located at the left and right side of the robot and let them blink (f = 1,5 ± 0,5 Hz) when the robot is turning left or right, respectively. The indicators should be visible von all sides of the robot and ideally start blinking before the actual turn of the robot to give the user a heads-up for the next movement of the robot.

Rationale

Vehicles communicate their change of direction via an orange blinker on both sides of the vehicle in a frequence of (f = 1,5 ± 0,5 Hz). They flash in the direction in which the vehicle is travelling.
